EARLY INSPIRATION
graphic design is...

I discovered graphic design as a senior Art History major at Yale when I enrolled in the two-semester foundation course. I was greatly inspired by the work and writing of Paul Rand, who taught in the graduate school at that time. This end-of-year piece reimagines Rand's prose as a playful illustrated poem. The production tools at my disposal included "the Macintosh computer system," a Xerox photocopier, an X-Acto knife and a glue stick. Definitely old school, but a method not without merit!

To this day, the concepts expressed in these two concise sentences remain the ultimate touchstone in my work and my creative endeavors. To paraphrase, graphic design is not good design if it is irrelevant; graphic design is not good design if it does not communicate.
